Copy of Email I sent home on January 8, 2021:

Hi all,
I wanted to touch base before next week.  I know you do not have my class January 11-15 week, but you may need to stop by.  I will have open studio hours 7:30-8:00 all week so please come in!
You have NO MORE clay days left for the semester.  January 21/22 you will be glazing what you have already created and you will be cleaning off your shelf and photographing your work.  A new module will open in Canvas called COMPLETED WORK.  All of your in-studio work needs to be uploaded to this module.  If you have work at home already, be sure you have a picture that you can upload!
I am asking that you return the styrofoam tray AND the wooden board that I gave you in your remote kit.  The rest of your materials you are welcome to keep or bring them back if you no longer need them.
Unfortunately January 21/22 ARE YOUR FINAL CLASSES!!! With this said, you will need to stop by my room to pick up glazed work before February 2.  Be sure to bring styrofoam tray and wood board to me on your final class day!
If you have questions, please come by next week.
Thanks everyone!
Ms. Larson

REMOTE CLASS TODAY!!!

*****The reeds can soak 10 minutes up to 10 hours.  You just need them to be soft enough to bend without snapping.  I will open our zoom at the start of class to answer questions, but joining the call is optional.  You will need your time to complete this so only join if you have questions!*******

There will be NO live link for class today.  It will be up to you to follow the instructions below, complete the assignment and POST 3 images of your work to the module!  Our class block is 75 minutes and I expect that you will utilize ALL of this time to create your sculpture.  In order to receive credit for your work today, you NEED to post 3 PICTURES of your progress by 3pm today!

Natural Reed

Nest, Cocoon or Cave

Step 1. Take your natural reed and submerge it in water.  Use a sink, bathtub or 9x13 cooking pan for this.  Be sure it is submerged!  If not the reed will snap!

Step 2. Once you have submerged your material, continue reading while your reed soaks!

Step 3. Find your colorful wire in your art took kit and any string, yarn, fabric, or even dental floss that you might want to add.  **The only required materials are the ones I gave you.  The others are merely suggestions!

Step 4. Check to be sure your reed is still submerged!

Step 5.  Look at these works that have been created from natural reed and/or wire:

https://pin.it/2m2BHV6

Step 6. Set a timer for 40 minutes and work with your softened natural reed, your colorful wire and any other materials you may have around your house to create a nest, cocoon or cave. You are free to use the wire independent from the reed or in conjunction with it.  The way you secure the ends of your reed is by tucking them to the inside of your sculpture.  As long as the reed is softened, it can bend without snapping.  If you have yarn you can tie the reed in place, but DO NOT USE your colorful wire to tie the reed in place!  The wire should accent, enhance or embellish your creation.

Step 7. Post 3 PICTURES of your creation to the Module!

1/2 Day Wednesday Dec. 16

Look at the foil art of two famous artists:

Tom Friedman-(his statement taken from Artsy)

"Tom Friedman’s sculpture is recognizable for its highly inventive and idiosyncratic use of materials like Styrofoam, foil, paper, clay, wire, plastic, hair, and fuzz. Working autobiographically, Friedman uses painstaking, labor-intensive methods to recreate seemingly random elements from his life. In each piece, he pays obsessive attention to detail, particularly in the replication of the objects that surround him. In Untitled (Bouquet) (2010), random objects appear to balance precariously on top of a studio crate, but the crate is actually made from Styrofoam and painted to look like a crate. “Art, for me, is a context to slow the viewer’s experience from their everyday life in order to think about things they haven’t thought about,” Friedman explains. “Or to think in a new way.”

Remote Assignment this week:

Use the canvas that is in your Remote Art Tool Kit along with sharpies, paint, pencils, white out or anything else you have to create a piece of graffiti-inspired art based on the work of Jean-Michel Basquait.

Jean-Michel Basquiat

American artist
Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. Basquiat first achieved fame as part of SAMO, an informal graffiti duo who wrote enigmatic epigrams in the cultural hotbed ... Wikipedia
Born: December 22, 1960, Brooklyn, New York, NY
I don't think about art when I'm working. I try to think about life.
I don’t listen to what art critics say. I don’t know anybody who needs a critic to find out what art is.
I had some money, I made the best paintings ever. I was completely reclusive, worked a lot, took a lot of drugs. I was awful to people.
