Course Syllabus

In Acting One we begin with the basic structure of Improvisation as a foundation upon which all of our work will be based.  Improvisation is not just for laughs.  Like Ballet for dance or Conditioning for Football, Improvisation is the tool box actors use to be in the moment.

Term 1. Improvisational Foundations - Yes And, Space Work, Listening, Focus, Character Relationships, Impulse work

Term 2. Acting Method & Vocal/ Physical Work- Stanislavski, Hagen, Linklatter - Physical and Vocal work helps us to develop characterization through finding our voice and releasing tension in our bodies.  Learning how to better access and control these instruments will help us to be stronger with our stage work.

Term 3. Scene Study- Comedy - Comedy is more difficult than Drama.  Finding text that will help us to recognize and study comic timing and the structure of comic banter among characters will allow us to access those fun improv tools that we have started to really cultivate. These will be assigned scenes.

Term 4. Scene Study- Drama- With everything that we have done up to this point, we have been developing the truth and honesty of our work.  With Drama scenes we will be focusing on REALISM. This will connect all of our work by stripping down to the rawness and realness of characters.  In addition, we will target subtext, scene tension and status.

Grading: Participation is KEY! Without participation I cannot see growth.  Even when not acting, we learn by watching.
