Course Syllabus

Wood Manufacturingrequires Introduction to Engineering as a prerequisite. Woodis a semester elective, but you can take it as many times as you like.

In this class, you will work independently on projects starting at a basic level and moving to more complex ones. We will start together with some basic lessons and skills needed for woodworking projects including the use of all of the tools. First time students will start by making a cutting board out of several different types of wood. This project includes the use of most of the tools in the shop.

Next you will work  on projects of your choice.  After taking one semester, you will be expected to progress on to more and more complex projects using a wider variety of tools and more advanced techniques.

For this course, you will need an Engineering Notebook.  While we will discuss a "proper" notebook that engineers use when working, your notebook needs to follow only a few main criteria:
*It should be a notebook solely used for this - there should be no notes or homework from other classes.
*It should be used every time we work on a project and include plans for working that class, things that
you actually did in the class, data and observations you made, and a plan for the next steps for your project.
*It should be neat and legible and should include neat drawings of your plans.

Grading is partly based on participation, but you will also be graded on how well you succeed and progress toward more advanced woodworking skills.  You will also be graded on your Engineering Notebook and on homework completion.  After projects, you will be expected to report out on it.  This will include a brief report and/or a presentation of your project.

You can always bring your grade up by improving on your prior work.

If you want extra help, use should contact me to set up a time to meet.  My schedule is posted near the door to rooms 156 and 158.  If you cannot meet during one of my "free" blocks, I am usually here after school, but definitely see me before coming to guarantee I am there.  You can also email questions to me and I will try to respond as soon as I am able.

PLANNING - With the hybrid schedule the way it is, we will only have class every other week. Each week we should be in school one day and online one day for 75 minutes each. We will also have an online class for 20 minutes most weeks on Wednesdays. But then we will have a week with no classes.
This means we will only be in the wood shop 7 or 8 times, and that means you will not be able to complete as many projects. What we will do, therefore, is focus on planning. Planning is an important part of woodworking, especially in school. Planning is vital to getting projects completely done. When we are in the shop, I cannot tell you how to do each step of a project. There will be other students, and I will have many things to do. Certainly I will be there to answer questions, to help you find what you need whether it be wood or other supplies, or tools. I will show you how to use the machines and tools. But I also need to keep an eye on every student at all times for safety. I need to be available to answer questions for everyone. So you need to have a clear plan going into the shop.
You will focus on planning on the days you have class online. You will probably work in small groups via Zoom or Google. I will check in when I can. If you have a question on your plans, write it down and move on until I can get to you. We will go over this process during the weeks we only meet online (before October 1).
