Overview
Skills English is designed to build reading, writing, and communication skills using dynamic and functional instruction. A highly supportive, differentiated teaching model will be used to ensure that each student has the opportunity to build their literacy skills.
Reading - Students will engage with nonfiction texts and media. They will engage with real world materials, such as schedules, websites, and ads, to increase their awareness and understanding of the community. Fiction texts and media will include individually leveled text in order to work on comprehension and decoding skills.
Vocabulary - Targeted vocabulary will be relevant to daily living skills. Students will practice using vocabulary in a variety of ways and have multiple opportunities to apply their knowledge.
Writing - Students will be working on developing their understanding of grammar, including what makes a sentence. This will include focus on building and editing sentences, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. Students will have opportunities to apply their writing skills in functional tasks, such as writing emails/messages, short stories, and sharing their opinions.

Grading
Grades for each marking period will be based on a point system where points will be obtained from in class activities, assigned work, quizzes, homework, class participation, projects and citizenship.
Classroom Expectations
These expectations are meant to foster a respectful, engaging, and productive learning environment where all students can thrive.
Respect - Treat all classmates, teachers, and staff with kindness and consideration.
Active Participation - Engage in class discussions, activities, and projects. Put in best effort.
Cleanliness - Keep the classroom and personal space tidy. Dispose of trash properly and respect shared learning spaces.
Cell Phones and Devices - Use electronic devices only for educational purposes as directed by the teacher.
Academic Honesty/Integrity
Remember that cheating, plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated and the school policy will be followed.
