Course Syllabus

Classroom Culture: This class is to be a safe environment. Disrespectful comments will not be tolerated. As a class, you will be learning from and working with your peers. It is expected that everyone communicates in a polite, professional manner. Simply put… treat others the way you want to be treated! If you feel there is a problem that needs to be addressed, please speak to me immediately about it.

Take ownership of your learning and give your best effort every day! Raise your hand, ask questions, and help a neighbor. You’ll be working in groups often, so get involved. Don’t take the back seat and let your peers do the work for you. Utilize class time wisely by taking detailed notes on material presented in class and staying on task during group and independent practice time.

Materials: Each day our class meets you are expected to bring your unit materials, a pencil, and a calculator (scientific or graphing).

Note:  Any change to the above Office Hours will be announced during class as well as via a Canvas Announcement.

Math Resource Center: This space is staffed by teachers in the Wellesley High School Mathematics department.  During A block the math resource center is in room 452. Any other block during the day, it is held in room 427. 

Cell Phones: To create a classroom community where students are present and engaged in a healthy and rigorous learning environment, cell phones, smart watches, and other electronic devices will not be used during class time. Students will be expected to turn their phones on silent and place them in the designated location.  Additional electronics, including headphones/AirPods, will also not be used during class time.  Please read the Cell Phone policy located in the 2026-2027 Student Handbook [page 10] for more information. 

Teacher Absence: If Mrs. Haig is absent, class is NOT canceled. A teacher will be covering the class and students are expected to complete the day’s agenda posted on Canvas. The work is to be completed prior to the next class meeting.  If a student does not complete the assigned work, Mrs. Haig will reach out to the student’s parent/guardian to inform them.

Student Absence: A student who has missed class is responsible for making up any missed work accomplished during their absence.  All information for each class is posted in Canvas.  If you miss a class you are expected to first access Canvas and try to complete the agenda for the day.  If you have any questions, please attend a Math Resource Center, email me with your question(s) or come to Office Hours.  If you are absent the day an assessment is given, then you are expected to schedule a time to make-up the assessment immediately upon your return to school. Please schedule a time via email.

Leaving the Classroom: One person may leave class at a time for a water or bathroom break. Your cell phone should remain in the cell lot during a break. If you know no one else is out of the room, you may excuse yourself. Otherwise, please check in with Mrs. Haig. Do not be out of the classroom for any longer than five minutes. You may only take one trip per class. If you leave during a lesson or while notes are being taken, you are responsible for the material you miss. No student may leave the classroom during an assessment. In order to go to the Nurse’s Office, you must obtain a pass from Mrs. Haig.

Grading Policy: The grade a student receives at the end of a term reflects the student’s level of understanding of the mathematical concepts covered during the current as well as previous term(s).  Students are given an opportunity to formally demonstrate their understanding of material on three term assessments and one end-of-term cumulative assessment. The purpose of the cumulative assessment is to allow students an opportunity to demonstrate they have mastered and retained previously assessed mathematical concepts.Assessment dates will be announced at the beginning of the term as well as posted on canvas. Suggested preparation options for each assessment are posted on canvas.

All assessments will remain in the classroom. Students will be given time to process feedback on each assessment during class time. If students wish to spend more time reviewing their performance feedback on any given assessment, then they are encouraged to communicate this to their teacher. An appointment will be made to spend more time reflecting on the assessment outside of regular class time.

Term Grade Calculation will be calculated as follows:

Term Assessments  (3 per term)                                        45%  

End-of-Term Cumulative Assessment                               30%  

The higher of the Term Assessment average                   15%

     or the score on the End-of-Term Cumulative Assessment   

Homework                                                                           10%

Year Grade Calculation: 

• 88% (22% for each term)of the final year grade will be determined by averaging the       Terms 1 - 4 grades.
• 12% of the final year grade will be determined by the course Final Exam.

Assessment Day Protocol: All assessments are designed to be completed in 45 minutes. After a student turns in their assessment, they will not have access to their computers or other electronic devices. Students will be provided an extension problem and/or logic puzzle on paper to work on for the remainder of class. They may also bring a book to read or work for other classes as long as they are paper based assignments. 

Homework Philosophy & Expectations: Homework will be assigned each day our class meets.  You should expect nightly homework to take 25 minutes or less to complete.   Homework will either be assigned on DeltaMath or in the unit packet. Come to class prepared by checking your solutions ahead of time and starring any problems you have questions on. Homework assigned on DeltaMath will be recorded in PowerSchool. Late homework can earn up to 85% credit up until the morning of the unit assessment. Once the assessment begins, homework for that unit is closed and entered into Powerschool while the assessment is taken. 

Honor Code & Academic Integrity: Please read the Wellesley High School Expectations and the Academic Integrity policy located in the 2026 - 2027 Student Handbook.   When submitting work be honest about the source(s) used to complete the assignment.  Do not pass off the work of others as your own.  Any incident of cheating will result in a grade of zero and a phone call home. Repeated incidents of cheating could result in a zero for the course.  Don’t jeopardize your integrity.  Cheating, in any form, is NEVER worth it.

District Curriculum Accommodation Plan (DCAP): District accommodations (DCAP) are available to all students, and in the 26-27 school year, WHS is committed to moving this forward with fidelity.

While some accommodations can be offered at the moment, others require advanced notice. 

For example: Extended time on an in-class assessment is a collaborative decision made by the teacher, student, and family to meet individual student needs. The WHS guideline is up to 25% extra time. This accommodation relies on proactive student communication prior to the date of the assessment. The student and teacher must establish how the accommodation will be provided.
