Music Theory and Aural Skills

OFFICE HOURS:  Monday. 2:30-3:30pm

 

OBJECTIVES:  In this course, the student will:

 

  1. Develop and articulate thoughts and ideas on the topic of Music Theory.

 

  1. Learn elements of music theory and aural skills.

 

  1. Develop skills in reading and writing music, using correct notation, symbols, and vocabulary.

 

  1. Compose/arrange music using a variety of tonalities and meters.

 

  1. Engage in aural skill activities that strengthen the “seeing ear” and the “hearing eye.”

 

  1. Study the elements of music, musical styles, periods of music history/music appreciation, composers and compositions.

 

  1. Improve skills in listening to music as an art form and analysis of music as an aesthetic art form through critical analysis and comprehension.

 

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

 

  1. 1  inch three ring binder.
  2. Pencils, Pencils, and more Pencils!
  3. Straight edge to be used in writing notation. An architectural triangle is suggested.

 

SUGGESTED MATERIALS:

 

  1. Metronome for aural skill activities. One that produces pitch also is ideal.
  2. Staff Paper
  3. Notation Software

 

GRADING

 

50%     Class Participation-  Determined through punctuality, attentiveness, effort, and preparation.

 

30%     Written Assignments- Complete all class assignments and homework!  Late work will not be accepted unless excused by the instructor.

 

10%     Quarterly Notebook Grade- Determined by organization and completeness!

 

10%     Quizzes and Tests-  All tests and quizzes will be weighted equally!

 

District Accommodations

District accommodations (DCAP) are available to all students, and in the 26-27 school year, WHS is committed to moving this forward with fidelity.

While some accommodations can be offered in the moment, others require advanced notice.

For example: Extended time on an in-class assessment is a collaborative decision made by the teacher, student, and family to meet individual student needs.  The WHS guideline is up to 25% extra time.  This accommodation relies on proactive student communication prior to the date of the assessment.  The student and teacher must establish how the accommodation will be provided.
